In November 2021, a group of concerned parents and community members created the non-partisan Cy-Fair Civic Alliance (CFCA) to bring the families of Cy-Fair ISD together to celebrate diversity, promote equity and inclusion, and protect our local public schools from political and religious extremists.
Members of CFCA became a regular presence and voice of reason at monthly school board meetings, communicated with the Cy-Fair ISD board of trustees and administration about important education issues, awarded a scholarship to a CFISD graduate who plans to become a teacher, and carried out a district-wide librarian appreciation campaign. CFCA started a monthly Books Under Fire event to discuss recently attacked literature, and organized a successful Back-to-School Bash that included a school supply drive for CFISD teachers.
Unfortunately, a loud minority of political and religious extremists are spreading lies about what our public schools are teaching, denigrating and disrespecting our selfless teachers, librarians, and administrators, promoting intolerance toward the LGBTQ+ community, suggesting that a Christian worldview be given preference over others, and rejecting the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to student success.
We believe in the separation of church and state, the principles of representative democracy, and a public school system that equips young people with the career and civic skills necessary to participate in our diverse, pluralistic society. Parents and community members must unite, across political, racial, and religious lines, for the sake of our children, our schools, and our community. In response to underhanded actions by those opposed to our non-partisan mission, Cy-Fair Civic Alliance made the decision to formally reconstitute as an official 501(c) 4 non-profit under the new name Cypress Families for Public Schools (CFPS).
We are more committed than ever to stand up against political and religious extremists, defend our students, teachers, and schools, and help elect non-partisan school board candidates who will represent all the families of Cy-Fair ISD. We invite the residents of the Cy-Fair area to join us regardless of their politics, religion, race, or sexual orientation. We must speak up at board meetings and show up to vote for non-partisan school board candidates. Cy-Fair ISD is a wonderfully diverse district and it will take all of us to ensure that it remains a great place for all our children to learn, grow, and thrive.
